Barcelona is Spain's beautiful seaside city. Brimming with famous architecture, streets, lanes and alleyways just bursting with culture, and a drinking and dining scene to rival any city in the world, it's sure to capture your heart the moment you land. With so much to see, do, eat and drink, the most difficult thing you'll have to do during a stay in Barcelona is figure out how you'll fit everything in.

The first stop on every visitor's list is Gaudi's iconic and still unfinished La Sagrada Família, designed as atonement for the city's sins of modernity and attracting 2.8 million visitors a year according to Lonely Planet. Then there's the Camp Nou, the home stadium of Barcelona F.C. and a Mecca for visiting sports fanatics. It's impossible not to enjoy a leisurely ramble along La Rambla, a broad and bustling pedestrian boulevard where you can spend hours marvelling at the architectural beauty or delving into the delights of the local shops and cafes.

It's little wonder that Barcelona El Prat airport sees such huge visitor numbers, with in excess of 30 million passengers travelling through every year. Situated 14 kilometres to the west of the city it's the main airport in the Catalonia region. We've compiled all you need to know about this busy airport to help make your journey and car hire as smooth as possible.

Airport & Terminals

The airport itself is comprised of two terminals, conveniently named T1 and T2. Should you need to travel between the two you can avail of the free airport shuttle bus. It serves airlines from all over the globe, including (but not limited to) Aeroflot, Air Berlin, Air France, Air Canada, American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Airlines, Easyjet, Emirates, Iberia, KLM, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines and United Airlines.

Directions & Transport

Once the time comes to return your car a short 20-30 minute trip from the city centre will get you to the airport. Just follow the Avinguda de la Granvia de l'Hospitalet out of the city and the airport will be well signposted.

If you've already returned your car there are plenty of public transport options. The Aerobús A1 and A2 both leave regularly from Plaça de Catalunya and trains leave regularly from Clot, Passeig de Gracia, or Barcelona Sants and will have you in the airport in 30 minutes. Alternatively a taxi will cost between 20-35 euros, depending on where in the city you are.

Any of these options will also conveniently take you from the airport into the city, should you need it.

Shopping & Duty Free

Although the majority of shops in Barcelona Airport are found in T1 there are still plenty of shopping options around the airport no matter where you're flying from. Duty-free shops offer good value on perfumes, cosmetics and gifts. Other shops cater for travellers fashion, accessories and electronics needs. There is also a nice selection of food and drink options.
