The airport is within close proximity to the city centre, around seven kilometres away. If you're returning a rental car, it is under a 15 minute drive via the main shopping street of Amagerbrogade without traffic. There's also the option of a slightly longer journey using the E20.
If you've already returned your rental car, make use of Copenhagen's brilliant public transport system. There are plentiful options from the airport with one being the free shuttle bus. It departs every 15 minutes from terminal one for domestic travel and terminals two and three for international flights from 4:30 am to 11:30 pm. Outside these hours, it is still only an extra five minute wait as the bus runs every 20 minutes between 11:30 pm and 4:30 am.
There is also the train located in terminal three, which runs every 10 minutes during the day, but on a lower frequency during the night. This will get you to Copenhagen Central in 13 minutes on a three zone ticket that can be purchased above the train station. There is also the metro station located right above terminal three. No need to worry about going the wrong direction as these trains only go one way to the city centre. They run every four to six minutes during the day and every 15-20 during the night and are just a short 13 minute trip.
You would be wise to invest in a Copenhagen Card which gives you unlimited transportation across all of Copenhagen. It also grants you free entry to 72 attractions and museums as well as discounts at some restaurants.
If all of those options don't excite you, then there are taxis that make pick ups outside terminals one and three. It is important to note that all fares include value added tax and tips, but you can normally pay by credit card.
